Chard Re hires Orendorf as senior portfolio analyst

Chard Re, the reinsurance-linked investment manager launched by well-known former Markel CATCo executives Rick Montgomerie and Charlie Vaughan, has hired a new Senior Portfolio Analyst in William (Bill) Orendorf, who is based in Bermuda.

Orendorf joins Chard Re after spending over two years working at AXIS Re as an Underwriter of North American Property reinsurance business.

With AXIS having announced a pull-back from property reinsurance earlier this year, Orendorf has found a new opportunity where his expertise can be put to good use.

Chard Re was launched by Montgomerie and Vaughan when they departed Markel CATCo, as that business was being wound-down.

They had managed the CATCo Aquilo fund and took on its running-off, while also raising capital for a new strategy under the Chard Re brand.

Typically, the Chard Re strategy has been focused on collateralised property catastrophe reinsurance and some retrocession contracts, with Montgomerie and Vaughan leveraging deep contacts in the industry and participating in select reinsurance programs.

Chard Re offers institutional investors a way to access select reinsurance-linked returns and the founders have a long history sourcing reinsurance business for hedge funds or investors and managing portfolios of risk.

Orendorf has worked in reinsurance for almost 20 years and his underwriting background will be valuable in the Senior Portfolio Analyst position at Chard Re.

The first almost eight of those was spent at TransRe, where he became a Senior Underwriter, before moving to Chubb’s Tempest Re and becoming a Vice President in Bermuda.

Orendorf then worked in California for a spell with reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter, before returning to Bermuda to work at AXIS Re.
